Have you come to the place in your spiritual life where you know for certain that if you were to die today you would go to Heaven? Suppose you were to die tonight and stand before God and He were to say to you, "Why should I let you into my heaven?" What would you say? The bible has only one answer to these questions. There is both good news and bad news. the bad news is something about yourself and the good news is something about God.
You are a sinner.
The Bible says, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). When the Bible says that you or I have sinned, it means that we have fallen short of god's standard of perfection which is God Himself.
The Penalty for sin is death.
The Bible says, "For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23). A wage represents what we have earned by our deeds. So the bible is saying that because you and I sin we earn death. Death and eternal punishment are the wages of sin. Hopefully you will agree that this is bad news. Since there is no way we can earn eternal life, the good news is that God decided to come to us to give us heaven as a free gift.
The good news is that Christ died for you. The Bible says that "God demonstrated His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8). The Bible says that Christ is our substitute. He came into the world, took the malignant sin that was causing our death, placed it upon Himself, and died in our place. The third day He arose as proof that sin and death had been conquered forever.
You can have eternal life by faith.
The Bible says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, that no one should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9). ..."But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our LORD." (Romans 6:23b).
Since Jesus Christ died for our sins, God can now give eternal life as a free gift to all who will accept His gift by faith. Faith is not just mental agreement about these facts but a volitional act of trusting Christ to forgive you and give you eternal life. Entrance into heaven is never based upon Church membership, Baptism, or being a good person. If God were to ask you, "Why should I let you into heaven?" what would you reply? The only acceptable reply would be to say "I am trusting Christ as my Savior." Trust in Jesus Christ alone and God will give you eternal life as a gift. If you have never trusted in Christ why not pray right now and tell God you are trusting His Son? Remember it is not the prayer that saves you. It is trusting Jesus Christ which saves. Prayer is simply talking to God. If you need help pray the following:
"Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I know my sin deserves to be punished. I believe Christ died and rose from the grave for me. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior. Thank you for the forgiveness and eternal life I now have. In Jesus name, Amen."
The Bible says, "He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life." (John 5:24). The bible says that because you believed you have received eternal life. You are now part of god's family, the church.
